Current Situation
Significant portions of the population lack the digital literacy, access to technology, language skills, or accessibility because of physical limitations to new digital services provided by local governments. In cities with diverse and often aging populations, these factors restrict groups of people from accessing opportunities and services.
Goals and Objectives
The goal is to ensure that digital government services are accessible to all people, regardless of their financial status (which can inhibit access to internet services or devices), digital literacy, language proficiency, or physical capabilities. Services are created with an eye toward equity and access.
Technology Deployed
Translation services and multilanguage services, closed captioning, descriptions of images for those with eyesight issues, AI and intelligence assistants, voice-to-text options, broadband, public Wi-Fi, free Wi-Fi hotspots, and other programs to provide access to services
Use Case Summary
Smart communities work to provide government services, including digital government services, that are accessible for all residents. This includes using a range of tools for multilanguage and accessible services, affordable internet, and digital literacy training.
